Cuban woman leaves Russia after racist scandal“It will be very difficult to replace her”

Cuban volleyball player “Uralochka” Ailama Montalvo leaves Russia. According to RIA Novosti, the athlete decided to leave the club because of racist insults against her. However, the general director of the Yekaterinburg club, Valentina Ogienko, denied this information, saying that the racist scandal did not affect the athlete’s decision to leave the team.

“She is not satisfied with the local climate, her contract has ended, so Ailama returns to Cuba. And so she really liked everything – both the team and the attitude of the people in the team.

Therefore, the situation that has occurred has nothing to do with its solution, ”the Regional Newspaper quotes Ogienko as saying.

What happened during the match

In one of the time-outs, the head coach of Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Andrey Voronkov , in the final of the Russian Championship against Uralochka-NTMK, referring to one of his wards, dropped the phrase: “Why are you catching this monkey?”, Perhaps alluding to the only black volleyball player in the “Uralochka” – Cuban Ailama Montalvo. This moment got into the lenses of television cameras and caused a great resonance.

According to Match TV, the head coach of the “railwaymen” has not yet reacted to what happened. “Have you received an apology for Voronkov’s statements? So far, there is nothing, neither from the federation, nor from Lokomotiv, – they said in Uralochka.

Sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev was also surprised by the indifference to the racist scandal involving a foreign volleyball player. “What is typical… The racist Voronkov is silent like a stump, and no one cares… And really everyone…” Guberniev wrote in his Telegram channel.

On social networks, Ailama Montalvo warmly said goodbye to the Yekaterinburg team and promised to keep the memories of playing in Russia for a long time.

“Thanks to Uralochka for the opportunity to play for such a great club. Thanks to the girls for all the moments we spent together and to the fans for always supporting us. I am sure that I will never forget the time spent at the club. You are forever in my heart!” — wrote the athlete.

Ailama has been playing for Uralochka since 2019 and won silver and bronze medals at the Russian Championship. The volleyball player has been playing for the Cuban national team since 2017. She has two bronzes in the Pan American Cup among the senior youth teams under 23, the title of the most valuable player in the Pan American Cup 2019 among players under 23, as well as the bronze of the Final Four Cup among girls in 2017.

Who will replace Montelvo?

Former volleyball player of the Russian national team Dmitry Fomin , in an interview with Gazeta.Ru, said that the loss of the 21-year-old Cuban would be tangible for the Yekaterinburg team. “She was a key player in Uralochka, hitting 45-50 shots per game, so it will be very difficult for the team to replace her.

There are very few players on the market right now, they are in trouble. Even with money, it is difficult to complete the team now.

If you conditionally give any club any money with the condition to collect players and take first place in the championship, then no one will do this, ”the expert said.

According to him, incorrect statements about Ailama will not affect the future of the country’s women’s championship.

“Could a racist scandal affect the attractiveness of the Russian league? No I do not think so. It seems to me that the coach (Andrey Voronkov, head coach of ZhVK Lokomotiv. – Gazeta.Ru) did not want to offend anyone on purpose. If the decision of the Russian Volleyball Federation (VVR) is adequate, then everyone will have no questions on their own.

This cannot be left unnoticed, it will be interesting for me to watch how this is all resolved. I repeat, this is an unpleasant episode, but I don’t think that the Lokomotiv coach wanted to somehow insult the Cuban volleyball player on purpose, ”Fomin concluded.
